Amid cold wave conditions, Republic Day parade rehearsals were carried out at Delhi's Rajghat on December 24. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited his UK counterpart Boris Johnson as the chief guest to grace the occasion. The latter has accepted the invite. India celebrates Republic Day on January 26, every year.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Sarnath Archaeological Site in Varanasi on Monday evening. The prime minister was accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. PM Modi watched the light and sound show at the Sarnath site. Earlier the prime minister also watched the laser show at the ghats. This comes after PM Modi attended Dev Deepawali Mahotsav at Raj Ghat in Varanasi, earlier in the day. The prime minister lit the customary first diya at the Raj Ghat. Police and CRPF personnel dispersed farmers from Red Fort after they hoisted a flag there. Farmers' 'gherao' Red Fort amid their tractor rally. Central Reserve Police Force, Director General AP Maheshwari wished the countrymen on the occasion of 72nd Republic Day. He further informed that CRPF has provided 45 companies to Delhi Police of which are 13 companies are of Rapid Action Force. DG AP Maheshwari said, "On the occasion of Republic Day, I would like to wish all the countrymen on behalf of CRPF. We have developed a new technology by inducting night vision and day vision device which is called fusion monocular. This assists the soldiers in a clear vision during both day and night time. Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has provided 45 companies to Delhi Police on the occasion of Republic Day, of which 13 companies are of Rapid Action Force (RAF)."
Left Front chairman Biman Bose said that Left parties, Congress and allies will take out in all districts to support farmers' agitation on Republic Day. "On Republic Day tomorrow, Congress, Left parties and its allies have planned marches in all districts to support farmers' agitation in Delhi. On Jan 30th, we'll also go to Gandhi Ashram and conduct an assembly on Mahatma Gandhi's death anniversary," Bose said.
Gujarat Police detained supporters of former chief minister Shankersinh Vaghela on December 26 outside Gandhi Ashram as they commenced their protest march towards Delhi. Vaghela had announced protest march towards Delhi from Ahmedabad to support the protesting farmers in the national capital. Currently, he is in under detention at his residence.

The display of cultural tableaux was held as a part of the 72nd Republic Day parade. Leading from the front, Ladakh showcased their first-ever tableau. Tableau displayed culture and communal harmony besides art, architecture, festivals, literature and music. A replica of the Sun Temple at Modhera was also displayed on the Gujarat tableau, depicting parts of the Sun Temple including its 52 pillars. Tableau of Punjab showcased the glory of 9th Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur, with the theme of '400th Birth Anniversary of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur'. The end of the trailer shows Gurdwara Sri Rakab Ganj Sahib, the site of cremation of Guru Tegh Bahadur. Designed after the theme 'Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh's tableau also displayed the auspicious Ram Mandir. The forepart of the middle tableau shows Deepotsava of Ayodhya, in which millions of earthen lamps were lit.
The Tricolour was unfurled at Rajpath in the presence of President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other dignitaries, on 72nd Republic Day. Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju inaugurated a residential hostel in the premises of the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range. The facility has been created at a cost of Rs 12.26 crores. It will be a 162 bedded air-conditioned hostel with attached washroom facility. There will also be an air-conditioned dining area and facilities for sports-specific diet and a separate recreation area for boys and girls. With the creation of this hostel facility, it will be a major boost for the Indian shooters training at the facility who have previously been staying at accommodation outside the shooting range. The hostel will enable the shooters to now only take a short walk down to their respective rifle, pistol and shotgun ranges.
