Twins both win their club's championships on the same day

Meet Britain's best golfing twins - a brother and sister who both won their club championships on the same day aged 16.Calum and Maya Fitzgerald recently triumphed in the men's and ladies' competitions at their home course - and have now got their sights set on the top of the sport. The siblings have only been playing for a combined total of five years but have already cut their handicaps dramatically.Calum, who plays off three, decided to give golf a go after watching it on television and walking past the course at Bowood Golf Club, Wilts. He had one lesson and became hooked, so started practicing all hours of the day - which caught Maya's attention. She then decided to tag along to her brother's coaching one day - and too caught the golfing bug.Maya now plays off of a handicap of five and is already breaking records, having become the youngest female winner of the club championships. The siblings, who live in nearby Derry Hill, are now hoping to follow in the footsteps of pro golfer Jordan Smith, who triumphed at Bowood in 2008.He went on to win a tournament on the European Tour in Germany in 2017 and is currently ranked 69th in the world. The twins' mum Marie said: "Being twins, Calum and Maya were used to spending a lot of time together and always had similar sporting interests."The year after Calum started golf, he was then spending so much time practising that Maya decided to tag along with him a few times."Once she had a lesson with [club pro] Gregg she was also instantly hooked."Calum and Maya both triumphed on Sunday (4/10), overcoming players much older and more experienced than them.He said: "I had never expected to win as the standard of the golf club's members golf is so high."It's the continuous challenge of trying to get better that I particularly enjoy, as well as discovering how the game can be played in so many different ways."She added: "It's great to win such an important and historic vase at a club that's as recognised as Bowood."Every round of golf is different and I enjoy practising the many different aspects of the game, both mental and within the swing."Ben Emerson, director of golf at Bowood, said: "It is marvellous to see how Calum and Maya have progressed as golfers in these past few years under Gregg's skilled guidance."The whole team at Bowood extends huge congratulations to our first sibling champions on their individual wins alongside one another."It was not that long ago that European Tour winner Jordan Smith achieved success in the 2008 Bowood Golf Club Championship as Maya and Calum have done this year - and look at where he is now."The Fitzgerald surname is definitely one to watch and we are wishing them both lots of future success."
