Around 300 young men from Jammu and Kashmir were formally made soldiers in the Indian Army on Saturday.

The Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regimental Centre showcased its latest batch of 301 new soldiers in a parade on 10 October at the Bana Singh Parade Ground of the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regimental Centre .

The event was particularly significant as it followed the government's decision to remove the region's special status last year.

The region, which is also claimed by neighbouring Pakistan, was formerly administered by India as a state with a special status and significant autonomy.

That was controversially withdrawn last year by India's government, led by Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
