‘India’s GDP growth this year will be negative or near zero’: FM Sitharaman
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth for the current fiscal 2020-21 will be in negative or near zero, owing to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Finance Minister was speaking at the 4th Annual India Energy Forum by CERAWeek on Oct 28.
She further said, "Festival season has commenced in India, as a result of which I expect the demand to go up and therefore, be sustainable also." Sitharaman added, “Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflow have seen 13 per cent growth in Covid-19 affected April-August 2020 compared to April-August 2019.” Watch the full video for more details.
Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan met US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry on Wednesday. The dignitaries held talks on several issues including energy and technology. The meeting took place in New Delhi. John Kerry is on a four-day visit to India, from April 5 to April 8. Kerry earlier met union ministers S Jaishankar, Nirmala Sitharaman and Prakash Javadekar. United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry on April 07 met Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan in the national capital. Both the dignitaries had a fruitful talk on several issues. Kerry is on a four-day visit to prepare for United States President Joe Biden's Climate Change Summit on April 22. The United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate recently said that US is committed to halt global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius and hopes to help India cut emissions as well. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on April 04 alleged that Congress is B-team of Left Democratic Front (LDF). "In Modi Govt, law enforcement agencies do their business as per law. During UPA, mountainous amount of corruption happened but no agency was allowed to investigate. Congress is B-team of LDF," said Finance Minister Sitharaman.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended a webinar programme on budget allocation for Department of Financial Services where he focused on encouraging private enterprises. He said, "There is still great scope for the banking and insurance sectors in our economy. Keeping this in mind, we have taken many steps in this Budget - be it our decision to privatise two PSBs, raising FDI limit to 74% in insurance or our decision to bring LIC IPO. Our effort is to encourage private enterprises wherever possible. However, the country needs effective participation of the public sector in banking and insurance."
