The Army Day celebrations began in Delhi. Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat, Army Chief General MM Naravane, IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria and Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh paid tributes at National War Memorial. Army Day is celebrated on Jan 15 every year. On this day in 1949, Field Marshal KM Cariappa became the first Indian to take charge of the Indian Army.
Asserting that the made in India light combat aircraft Tejas is far better and advanced than the Chinese-Pakistani JF-17 fighter jets, Air Force chief RKS Bhadauria on Thursday said the latest Indian jet would be better equipped to carry out Balakot-type airstrikes. the Air Chief said the 83 indigenous fighter jets to be inducted into the force would also be equipped with homegrown weapons such as the Astra beyond visual range air to air missiles and other standoff weapons. "Indian aircraft Tejas is far better and advanced than the Chinese and Pakistan joint venture JF-17 fighter," Bhadauria said when asked to compare the Indian fighter with the JF-17. Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria on being asked if Tejas aircraft would able to carry out Balakot type airstrike if required in future said that it will have the capability of a standoff weapon which will be even beyond the capability we used that time. "The most potent BVR weapon that we have today is getting developed, and there will be other lot of air weapons which are currently on, some of the weapons are from our current inventory. And stand-off weapons that get developed by DRDO and will go into this aircraft," added IAF Chief RKS Bhadauria while speaking to ANI on January 15.
For the very first time, Rafale fighter jets will participate in the Republic Day parade 2021. IAF spokesperson Wing Commander Indranil Nandi said, "Total 42 aircrafts will participate in Republic Day parade 2021 in New Delhi.We'll have Rudra formation, Sudarshan formation, Garuda formation will be formed this year. Rafale fighter jet will also participate in the Republic Day parade 2021 for the first time." Republic Day is celebrated on January 26, every year.
Equity benchmark indices wiped out early losses on Thursday and closed in the positive terrain led by gains in pharma counters. The BSE SandP Sensex closed 92 points or 0.19 per cent higher at 49,584 while the Nifty 50 ticked up by 31 points or 0.21 per cent to 14,596. Sectoral indices at the National Stock Exchange were mixed with Nifty pharma gaining by 0.8 per cent, FMCG by 0.7 per cent and auto by 0.3 per cent. Among stocks, Hindustan Aeronautics surged by 9.5 per cent after the government approved procurement of 83 indigenously developed light combat aircraft Tejas for Indian Air Force at a cost of Rs 48,000 crore. The others which gained marginally included IndianOil Corporation, GAIL, ITC, Britannia and Tata Motors. However, HCL Technologies dropped by 2.3 per cent to Rs 1,031 per share as traders booked profits. Tech Mahindra and Wipro slipped by 1.3 per cent each while Infosys lost by 1.2 per cent. Meanwhile, Japanese stocks jumped to a three-decade high and other Asian equities were near record peaks as investors focused on US stimulus prospects and extended bets on global recovery and growth.
Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Minister, K Sudhakar inaugurated COVID-19 vaccination drive on January 17 for the healthcare workers. He inaugurated the drive at Manipal Hospitals in Bengaluru today. Billed as the world's largest vaccination programme, covering the entire length and breadth of the country, the drive aims to first inoculate millions of its healthcare and frontline workers and reach an estimated 3 crore people by the end of its first phase. The mega COVID-19 vaccination drive began in India on January 16. Speaking to ANI, K Sudhakar said, "Doctors expect around 70-80% turn out today. Whatever issues we faced yesterday (January 16) in the CoWIN app, will be sorted out by Monday."
