How are Chico and Butte County's firefighters dealing with the Covid-19 situation?

Recently Chico Fire Department reported more than a dozen cases.

More than a dozen local firefighters -- are among those sick with covid-19.

Amy what does this mean for fire protection in the community?

Chico fire chief steve sandridge says they are able to cover for those sick firefighters.

Chief standridge: "so we are doing a lot of overtime to maintain our daily staffing," and that's not all chico fire chief steve standridge says they're doing to keep us safe.

Standridge: "we mandated wearing masks again in the stations, maintaining six foot distancing as best as possible, predicated ont he fact that we still have living conditions we have firefighters who work and live at our stations for 48 hours at a time."

Amy standup: "the city of chico isn't the only department in butte county dealing with positive covid cases.

Butte county cal fire also has about a half a dozen firefighters who are out because of covid."

Rick carhart: "i don't have any information at all about the condition of anyboody in out unit who is out."

Cal fire spokesman rick carhart says cal fire is taking the necessary precautions to make sure people stay safe as well.

Rick: "anytime there is interaction with the public the firefighters are getting out of the engine putting masks on and gowns on and these are things that are engrained into the habits of them anyway."

Carhart says they also clean the sation and their gear after calls and after shifts.

Carhart added that they too are able to fill the spots of firefighters who are out sick.

Chico fire chief standridge says 21 of his people are in quarantine .

Some have already tested negative..

But out of precaution they're keeping them all away from other workers in the station.
