Indian-American Vanita Gupta has been nominated as the Associate Attorney General of US by president-elect Joe Biden. The news back home has generated happiness for her family. Gupta's uncle Sarvesh Kumar, who lives in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh, has called the nomination a "matter of great pride" for them as well as the country, and said her niece has always been fighting for people of colour. "Nomination of an Indian-American for such a high post is a matter of great pride for us as well for the country. She has always been fighting for people of colour," Sarvesh Kumar told reporters as he cheered for her niece. Gupta currently hold the position of President and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, an umbrella group of civil rights interest groups. Gupta has served both during Barack Obama and Donald Trump in different capacities.
A 65-year-old woman, who was in Pakistan jail, returned to India after 18 years. Hasina Begum had gone to Pakistan to meet her husband's relatives but landed up in a Pakistani jail after she lost her passport. She returned to India on Tuesday after Aurangabad police filed a report on the matter. She was received by her relatives and Aurangabad police officials upon her return. According to the information received from the police, Begum who is a resident of Rashidpura area under the City Chowk police station limits in Aurangabad is married to Dilshad Ahmed who is a resident of Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur. Pakistan released Begum last week and handed her over to Indian authorities.

Andy Harris (R-MD) was stopped from bringing a concealed gun onto the House floor, sources told CNN, the first time a member of Congress has been discovered with a firearm by the metal detectors now set up outside the legislative chamber. Personnel of the Indian Army carried out a controlled explosion in Jammu and Kashmir on January 10.
