Covid: Is new virus variant more deadly? CSIR DG comments amid India alert
After the Government of India said that a new variant of the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus discovered in the United Kingdom hasn't been found in India yet, director general of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research commented on the features of the mutant virus.
Shekhar Mande said that it is not yet known whether the mutation has made the virus more deadly, but vaccines are likely to remain effective.
Meanwhile, the health secretary of Tamil Nadu specified actions taken by the state government regarding passengers from the UK.
A total of 1,43,01,266 beneficiaries have been vaccinated for COVID-19 across India. The country also reported 16,752 new COVID-19 cases and 11,718 discharges on Feb 28. With new infections, the COVID tally of the country stood at 1,10,96,731 while, active cases stand at 1,64,511. With 113 deaths in last 24 hours, death toll rose to 1,57,051.

MEA Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava on February 25 informed that Government of India in liaison with the authorities of United Kingdom for early extradition of fugitive economic offender Nirav Modi who has been ordered by a local court to be extradited to India. West Minister magistrate court in London had pronounced that Nirav Modi be extradited to stand trial in India. Anurag Srivastava said, "They have dismissed his mental health concerns and the judge has observed that Nirav Modi has conspired to destroy evidence and intimidate witnesses. Now since the magistrate court has recommended Nirav Modi's extradition to the UK Home Secretary."
