Assange fiancee: We will celebrate the day he comes home
The fiancee of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has hailed his “victory” inhis fight to avoid extradition to the United States.
However, Stella Morissaid she and the couple’s two young sons cannot celebrate until the day hegoes home.
District Judge Vanessa Baraitser said at the Old Bailey on Mondaythat, due to the real risk of suicide, Assange, 49, should not be extraditedby “reason of mental health”.
But his supporters raised concerns that herjudgment focused on his health and rejected defence arguments over freedom ofspeech.
Julian Assange faces a further wait to find out whether his final UK bid to appeal over his extradition to the United States can go ahead at the High Court. Speaking outside the High Court in London, Stella Assange, Julian's wife, says she is "astounded" by the decision, speaking after the judgment. She said: "What the courts have done has been to invite a political intervention from the United States... send a letter saying it's all OK. I find this astounding." Report by Covellm. A woman who was shot dead outside a police station 21 years ago was unlawfully killed, a jury has concluded. Sabina Rizvi was 25 when she was shot and killed by unidentified assailants in March 2003 outside Bexleyheath police station in south-east London. An inquest into Ms Rizvi's death at the Old Bailey has been looking into whether officers at Bexleyheath police station knew that a gangland feud posed a risk to Sabina's life. A woman has been jailed for seven years for handing over a three-year-old British girl for female genital mutilation (FGM) during a trip to Kenya. Amina Noor, 40, from Harrow, north-west London, was found guilty last year of assisting a non-UK person to carry out the procedure overseas 18 years. Outside the Old Bailey, Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy said, "Our mission at the Met is to prevent FGM from taking place, but we know we cannot do this through prosecution alone".
