Sriwijaya Air plane loses contact after taking off from Jakarta
Indonesia’s Sriwijaya Air lost contact with flight SJY 182 traveling from Jakarta to Pontianak, according to Indonesia’s Head of National Transportation Safety Committee, Suryanto Cahyono.
A magnitude-6.4 earthquake struck near Indonesia's Java island, causing tremors felt in Jakarta and prompting evacuations in another city. No immediate casualties or damage were reported, and no tsunami warnings were issued. Indonesia, situated on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," faces frequent seismic activity. Past quakes, like a 2021 Sulawesi tremor and the 2004 Aceh disaster, highlight the nation's vulnerability and the need for robust disaster preparedness.

Indonesia Issues Tsunami Alert , Following Volcano Eruption.
On April 17, hundreds of villagers on
Ruang Island, North Sulawesi, were ordered
to evacuate by Indonesian authorities.
Since the night of April 16, a 2,400-foot volcano known as Mount Ruang
"erupted at least five times," CNN reports. .
Authorities fear that Mount Ruang
could collapse into the ocean and trigger
a tsunami, just like it did in 1871.
Earthquakes that recently occurred in the
area reportedly triggered the eruptions. .
The force of Mount Ruang’s
eruption is getting bigger and
has emitted hot clouds of
approximately 1.7 kilometers, Hendra Gunawan, the head of Indonesia's volcanology agency, via CNN.
About 800 people live on Ruang Island.
According to authorities, they have
evacuated to Tagulandang Island. .
Officials warn that even those on Tagulandang Island should be aware of possible "falling incandescent rocks and hot cloud surges," CNN reports. .
There have been no casualties reported thus far.
Indonesia, which sits on the Ring of Fire,
has over 120 active volcanoes.
In 2018, Anak Krakatau fell into the sea after erupting and caused a tsunami that killed over 400 people on the Java and Sumatra islands.
