154 monks have been tested COVID-19 positive in Gyuto Tantric Monastery in Himachal Pradesh's Sidhbari. A total of 330 monks have been tested so far. The monastery has been declared as 'containment zone'. Kangra CMO Dr GD Gupta said, "Following initial cases on Feb 23rd, 330 monks tested so far for COVID-19 and 154 of them tested positive at Gyuto Tantric Monastery, Sidhbari. One monk in critical condition shifted to Tanda Medical College, others in isolation in the monastery itself. Monks who have been home-isolated, had travelled from Karnataka and Delhi during new year celebrations."
Indian Army Chief General MM Naravane lashed out at Pakistan over its continued support to terrorists. Speaking at the Army Day celebration, the Army Chief said that Indian forces have been giving a stern response to provocations at the border and added that around 300 to 400 terrorists are waiting across the border to infiltrate into India. Actor Akshay Kumar celebrated the Army Day with Indian Army soldiers. He took to Instagram and shared a video of him playing volleyball with jawans from the Army. The actor, who took out time to celebrate the day, also flagged off a marathon. The short clip showed Akshay jump and hit the ball amid a thick cloud of mist. The Army Day celebrations held at Delhi's parade ground. Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat and Army Chief General MM Naravane arrived at parade ground. The felicitation ceremony was held during the celebrations. For the first time ever, Indian Army demonstrated combat swarm drones at the parade. Army Day is celebrated on Jan 15 every year. On this day in 1949, Field Marshal KM Cariappa became the first Indian to take charge of the Indian Army.
Of the many initiatives taken up by the Indian Army to improve the quality of life in Kashmir Valley, Kashmir Super 30 coaching education project is one major highlight. Under this project, Medical, Engineering, NEET aspirants, who are not financially sound, get required guidance and support to crack the entrance exams. Executed by National Integrity and Educational Development Organization (NIEDO), Indian Army oversees the overall administration and logistics. After multiple written exams and screenings, only 30 students get selected from JandK for this programme. These students get trained for 12 months before they sit in the entrance exams. It not just provides an equal opportunity to the under-privileged but also reinvigorate the process of peace, progress and stability in the Union Territory.
Speaking on the current situation in the Kashmir Valley post abrogation of Article 370 and 35A, Lt General of GOC (Chinar Corps), BS Raju, on March 01 said that the Indian Army have been able to establish trust and connect with the public through outreach programs which in turn will manifest into lower terrorist recruitment. "With better outreach programs by Army, civil administration and Police, we have been able to establish greater trust and connect with public. I believe this will manifest into lower (terrorist) recruitment," BS Raju said.
With an aim to strengthen and to connect with the next generation of Kashmir, Indian Army organised 'A Day with Company Commander' in Baramulla. During the event, children of the surrounding areas got an opportunity to visit the Army Camp and experience the life of army personnel. Games were also organised for children for their entertainment. The children wholeheartedly participated in all the events with great enthusiasm and vigour. Children enjoyed the event and expressed gratitude to Army for conducting such an event. The aim of this outreach program is to make relationship with people and children of Kashmir valley. Strategic Srinagar-Leh highway opened by Border Roads Organisation (BRO) after over 58 days. The highway was closed due to the thick layer of snow. Snow clearance of Zojila Pass was a big challenge owing to snow accumulation of 30-40 feet, threats of avalanches and inclement weather conditions. Inspite of all odds, the snow clearance operations had been conducted and completed by BRO. This road is important from the strategic point of view, being the only route between Kashmir and Ladakh. The solar heated tent was developed at Himalayan Institute of Alternatives in Ladakh.
