Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Arunachal Pradesh Tapir Gao on Tuesday claimed that it was during Congress' regime China occupied Sumdorong Chu Valley in Tawang and added that the then Army Chief planned an operation but former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi denied him permission to push back People's Liberation Army troops. "Since the 80s till today, they (China) are occupying this area, and construction of villages is not a new thing. They have already constructed military base between Bisa and Maza which is inside McMahon Line, under Indian territory," Gao added. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue of national security after reports that China has built a village in Arunachal Pradesh, and said China needs to be given a clear message. He termed the situation with China as "very dangerous" and said India under Modi does not have any clear cut strategy on China, which is testing the country and will not sit silent. Several people witnessed Jallikattu event in Madurai on January 16. Hundreds of bull tamers participated in the event. Participants showed their skills with their attempts to tame the bulls. Jallikattu is a bull-taming sport that has traditionally been part of Pongal festival. The festival is a celebration of nature, and thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest, of which cattle-worship is a part.

Several other leaders were also present. However, COVID norms went for a toss during the event. In the wake of COVID-19, State government directed that number of players shouldn't be over 150 at an event. The bull-taming sport is popular in TN. Jallikattu is celebrated in the second week of Jan, during the Tamil harvest festival, Pongal.
Bull tamers on January 14 raised slogans against farm laws amid Jallikattu event in Tamil Nadu's Madurai. The bull tamers also showed black flag against Centre. They were later detained by the police. Farmers of different states are protesting against Centre's newly enacted farm laws. Today is the first day of Jallikattu and the events are oganised in several places of Tamil Nadu. Pongal celebrations have also begun and people dressed up in their traditional attire and prepared sweet dish known as Pongal.

Schools in Tamil Nadu reopened for the students of classes 10th and 12th on January 19 after a gap of over nine months. A school in Madurai followed COVID-19 guidelines such as social distancing and masks. Students, teachers and other staff members were allowed entry only after a thermal screening. Director of School Education Department in Tamil Nadu, Dr S Kannappan visited Govt Girls Higher Secondary School in Chennai's Ashok Nagar on January 19. All educational institutions were forced to shut down due to coronavirus pandemic. Speaking to ANI, a student in Chennai said, "Half of our syllabus was covered during online classes. I am happy to see my friends after so long but we have to maintain social distance."
