Maharashtra reported 67,123 fresh COVID cases, 56,783 discharges, and 419 deaths on April 17. While Maharashtra's capital reported 8,834 new COVID-19 cases, 6,617 discharges and 52 deaths in last 24 hours. On the other side, Karnataka today registered 17,489 new positive cases, 5,565 discharges and 80 deaths. Kerala also reported 13,835 new cases, 3654 recoveries and 27 deaths today. Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh reported 11,269 new coronavirus cases, 6,497 recoveries, and 66 deaths in last 24 hours.

Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan demanded legal action against Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Viijayan, and used word 'Covidiot' for him. V Muraleedharan said, "'Covidiot' you know what it means. There's no other word that can be used for a CM who continuously violates COVID protocol. As per doctors of Calicut Medical College, Kerala CM tested positive on April 4 and on April 6 voted without following protocols that a primary contact person have to follow even if we consider it was not known to him as COVID positive."
Anannyah Kumari Alex, the first transgender candidate to fight the Kerala Assembly polls, backed out of the contest as the Democratic Social Justice Party (DSJP) nominee on April 03 alleging that she is facing stigma, gender discrimination and sexual harassment from her own party. Alex, who was in the poll fray from Vengara constituency in Malappuram district, said she filed a police complaint against the DSJP and the leaders who harassed her. "I withdrew because I am facing stigma, gender discrimination and sexual harassment from the Democratic Social Justice Party They are trying to play with me to get more publicity. They had some plans and reasons for putting me in the front," she told ANI.

Gasping for air, two men wearing oxygen masks share a bed in a government hospital in India's capital New Delhi, victims of the country's growing COVID-19 crisis. At Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital (LNJP), one of India's largest COVID-only facilities with more than 1,500 beds, a stream of ambulances ferried patients to the overflowing casualty ward on Thursday. "We are definitely over-burdened. We are already working at full capacity," said the hospital's medical director, Suresh Kumar. External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar met Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of France in New Delhi on April 13. Le Drian is on a three-day visit to India from April 13-15. It will be the first high-level physical interaction between India and France since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
