Asserting that the made in India light combat aircraft Tejas is far better and advanced than the Chinese-Pakistani JF-17 fighter jets, Air Force chief RKS Bhadauria on Thursday said the latest Indian jet would be better equipped to carry out Balakot-type airstrikes.
The Air Chief said the 83 indigenous fighter jets to be inducted into the force would also be equipped with homegrown weapons such as the Astra beyond visual range air to air missiles and other standoff weapons.
"Indian aircraft Tejas is far better and advanced than the Chinese and Pakistan joint venture JF-17 fighter," Bhadauria said when asked to compare the Indian fighter with the JF-17.
The Indian Air Force carried out a long range precision strike against a practice target to mark the second anniversary of the Balakot Operations. The strike was carried out by members of the same squadron who carried out the actual operations inside Pakistan in response to the Pulwama attack in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed. IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria also flew a multi aircraft sortie with the units to commemorate the occasion along with the squadron pilots. 'Balakot Air Strike', was the first aerial assault carried out by India in Pakistan after the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Balakot Air Strike was carried out as a reply to Pulwama attack that claimed lives of 40 CRPF officials. Second anniversary of the Balakot Operations was marked on February 26.

IAF chief RKS Bhadauria said that airpower can bring asymmetric results if time and place are chosen correctly. The IAF chief was speaking at a book launch event in New Delhi's Air Force Museum. Bhadauria released Retired Air Marshal Bharat Kumar's book 'The Epic Battle of Longewala'. "Pakistan Army's plan of armoured thrust was brilliant, but they didn't factor in airpower. 'They thought what could half a squadron sitting in Jaisalmer do? It was their mistake. Airpower can bring asymmetric results if the time and place are chosen correctly," he said. The Battle of Longewala took place in December 1971 in the Thar desert of Rajasthan.

HAL chief R Madhavan spoke on the timeline of delivery of Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas. Madhavan said they will deliver the first aircraft to Indian Air Force by March 2024. "As per contract, we are to start delivery of LAC by 36 months from today. The first delivery of Light Combat Aircraft will be by March 2024. In the first year, there will be delivery of two aircraft which will be ramped up to 16. Total supply time, post first delivery is 6 years that makes total timeline for 9 years," he said. This comes after the Defence Ministry handed over the LCA Tejas contract to HAL at Aero India show in Bengaluru. HAL to manufacture 83 LCA mark 1A aircraft which is the advanced version of Tejas.
