Serum Institute of India (SII) CEO Adar Poonawalla on January 22 informed that there is no impact of fire on the production of 'Covishield' vaccine. "The extent of the damage is more than 1,000 crores. The supply of COVID-19 will not be affected due to the fire (at Serum Institute of India facility). No actual vaccine was being made at that facility. The fire has no impact on the production of 'Covishield' vaccine and no damage has occurred to the existing stock either," said Adar Poonawalla. A major fire had occurred at Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) on January 21 that claimed 5 lives also.
As the vaccination drive has already been kicked off in the Himalayan nation, the inoculation drive for elderly and most vulnerable age groups will commence from next month. Nepal has received the first batch of one million COVISHIELD Vaccine developed by Serum Institute of India on Sunday via Air India flight. The vaccines would be used to inoculate people above 60 years of age, which is 8.73 per cent of Nepal's population, in the vaccination drive that will begin on March 7. According to the Ministry of Health and Population, there are 2,652,258 elderly people above 60 years in the country. On January 21st 2021, Nepal had received a total of One Million COVISHIELD Vaccine from India under grant assistance.
Sri Lanka has cancelled a scheduled speech of Pakistan's prime minister, Imran Khan in parliament. This is being seen as a move to avoid confrontation with New Delhi. India had recently gifted 5 lakh doses of Covishield to Sri Lanka. In recent month there have been anti-Muslim sentiments in Sri Lanka as the Buddhist people have been protesting against animal sacrifices in Mosques.

BJP leader and Member of Bihar Legislative Assembly Neeraj Bablu raised a demand for a new population control law in the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday made his strongest pitch for privatisation of non-strategic PSUs, saying the government has no business to be in business and sustaining loss-making units on taxpayers' money drains resources that could otherwise have been spent on public welfare schemes. "It is government's duty to support enterprises and businesses. But it is not essential that it should own and run enterprises," the Prime Minister said at a webinar on the privatisation approach in the Budget for 2021-22. Indian Council of Medical Research DG, Balram Bhargava announced that the Covaxin is successful in tackling UK strain. He further informed that UK variant strain is now present in 70 countries and 164 cases have been identified in India. "UK variant strain is now present in 70 countries and we've identified 164 cases of it in India. We were able to find the first case of the UK variant on 22nd-23rd December. In a week's time, we were able to collect blood from these patients and culture the strain. We found that the neutralisation of UK strain was equivalent to Indian strains circulating in India. It's a very reassuring news that UK variant can be tackled by this vaccine," informed ICMR DG during a press briefing on January 28.
Tamil Nadu health minister C Vijayabaskar voluntarily took the vaccine Covaxin at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai. Vijayabaskar, who is a doctor and a member of the IMA, had earlier said that he was taking the vaccine to instill confidence in the people about the vaccine.
