Tamilisai Soundararajan was sworn in as Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, besides her existing charge as Telangana Governor. CM V Narayanasamy was also present at the ceremony. Kiran Bedi was recently removed as the Lt Governor of Puducherry. Removal of Bedi came ahead of Puducherry Assembly polls.
Kiran Bedi has been removed as the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry. Chief Minister V Narayanasamy has welcomed the decision and said this was the victory of the people. He said that Bedi had constantly interfered in the working of the government and blocked several welfare schemes. Narayanasamy added that Bedi’s removal came after several protests against her style of functioning. Meanwhile, Bedi posted a message on Twitter thanking the Central government and added that all she did was her sacred duty. Telangana Governor and Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan cast her vote at a polling station in Virugambakkam in Chennai on April 06. Congress leader Karti Chidambaram also cast his vote at polling booth number 276 in Tiruppathur in Sivaganga district. 234 seats are undergoing voting in the state today.
The voting for Assembly elections is underway in Puducherry on April 06. All India NR Congress chief N Rangaswamy visited Appa Paithiyam Swamy Temple and offered prayers today. Then, he cast his vote at Govt Boys Middle School in Thilaspet. Rangaswamy is contesting Puducherry elections from Thattanchavady and Yanam constituencies. Meanwhile, BJP Puducherry president V Saminathan exercised his right to vote today. He is candidate from Lawspet constituency. 30 constituencies are undergoing voting to choose 15th Puducherry Assembly today.
Strict restrictions will be implemented in Maharashtra from April 14 8pm due to surge in COVID-19 cases. State DGP, Sanjay Pandey in a press conference, informed that if anyone has any emergency, they will be allowed movement. "Shops selling essential items and public transport will remain operational. There is no provision of movement passes this time. We have given instruction to all our units that if anyone has an emergency they should be allowed movement," said Maharashtra DGP.
Despite rising COVID cases, Haridwar is jam-packed with pilgrims for Kumbh Mela on April 12. COVID protocols were flouted as devotees performed the rituals. Appreciating the efforts of police, Uttarakhand DGP Ashok Kumar said that as it was a peak day therefore, it was hard to make people follow it. DGP Ashok Kumar said, "Maha Kumbh has been challenging for the country, Uttarakhand Police is comparatively small in strength but Maha Kumbh takes place on that very scale. It was a challenging day for us. The crowd is a little less due to COVID. We have tried our best that the behaviour is right and COVID protocols are followed. Today is a peak day so it is not possible to make them follow protocols. The footfall is 50% less than what we were expecting this year due to COVID pandemic." Uttarakhand has over 7,000 active cases in the state.
Uttarakhand Director General of Police (DGP) Ashok Kumar chaired review meeting with officials over 2021 Haridwar Kumbh Mela at Police HQ in Dehradun on February 19. State DGP discussed crowd control, transportation and police deployment with State officials in the meeting. While speaking to ANI, Kumar said, "Officials from border states and Central agencies met over arrangements related to Haridwar Kumbh Mela 2021 today. Issues of crowd management, law and order, transportation and COVID protocols discussed. No VIP movement will be allowed on main 'Kumbh Snan' Day." The grand Kumbh Mela will start from April 01 to April 30 in Haridwar.
Delhi Police Commissioner SN Shrivastava urged Delhiites to follow the restrictions imposed by the Union Territory Government for their own betterment. "We are responsible for the current situation, everybody knows about COVID appropriate behavior, if situation like this arise than people are also responsible for it," said Shrivastava. The Delhi Police Commissioner added that self-isolation is the best possible solution against COVID-19. "I urge everyone to avoid themselves from uneven movements and social gathering," he said. Delhi reported over 16,000 COVID-19 cases on April 15.
After Delhi government announced 'weekend curfew' in national capital amid surge in COVID-19 cases, the delhiites on April 15, welcomed the Union Territory govt's decision. Delhi has reported 16,699 fresh COVID-19 infections on April 15. As per the new guidelines applicable till April 30, or till further order, all shopping malls, gymnasiums, spas, auditoriums, assembly halls, entertainment parks and similar places will be closed.
