The United States on Monday crossed the staggering milestone of 500,000 COVID-19 deaths just over a year since the coronavirus pandemic claimed its first known victim in Santa Clara County, California. Gloria Tso reports.

The Delhi Police arrested two key accused from Jammu for their alleged involvement in the violence at the Red Fort during the farmers’ tractor parade on January 26. Jammu and Kashmir United Kisan Front president, Mohinder Singh is a resident of Chatha area of Jammu and Mandeep Singh is a resident of Gole Gujral, Jammu. The duo was taken into custody by the Crime Branch of Delhi Police on Feb 22 night and immediately shifted to New Delhi for questioning. They were apprehended with the support of the Jammu and Kashmir Police. “As per the information received, both the accused are active participants and key conspirators in the riot at Red Fort,” Delhi Police Additional PRO Anil Mittal said. Thousands of protesters clashed with the police during the tractor parade called by farmer unions on January 26. Several protestors stormed Delhi’s Red Fort & hoisted flags from its ramparts. Citing the region's collaborative effort to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday called for greater integration among South Asia and the Indian Ocean island countries to deal with their challenges. "If the 21st century is to be the Asian century, it can not be so without greater integration among the countries of South Asia and the Indian Ocean islands. The spirit of regional solidarity shown during the pandemic has proven that such integration is possible," he said at a workshop on "COVID-19 Management: Experience, Good Practices and Way Forward" with 10 neighboring countries, including those in the extended neighborhood. "Through our openness and determination, we have managed to achieve one of the lowest fatality rates in the world. Today, the hopes of our region and the world are focused on the rapid deployment of vaccines. In this too, we must maintain the same cooperative and collaborative spirit," he said.

India demands UNSC's report on ISIL should cover activities of terrorist entities under ISIL and Al Qaeda Sanctions regime. They include Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad and frontal organizations that raise funds for their activities. India also participated in UNSC briefing to mark the anniversary of the Minsk II Agreement. The Agreement provides a basis for negotiated and peaceful settlement of the situation in Eastern Ukraine. India believes that peaceful settlement of disputes is an important tool in the maintenance of international peace and security and in the promotion of the rule of law.
