‘Slightly lagging behind…’: Army chief pushes for self-reliance in defence sector
Observing that India has "lagged behind slightly" in terms of the quick pace modernisation undertaken by our adversaries, and dependence of Indian armed forces on equipment of foreign origin needs to be addressed, Army chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane on Thursday said self-reliance in the defence sector has become a strategic necessity.
While addressing the arms-industry partnership virtually, the Army Chief pitched for a self-reliant India to become the main player in the global economy.
"Today self-reliance in defence has become a strategic necessity.
It is imperative for us to invest in building long term indigenous capabilities for application across the entire spectrum of conflict.
Considering the quick pace of defence modernisation being undertaken by our adversaries, we are lagging behind slightly.
The continuous and heavy dependence of Indian armed forces on equipment of foreign origin needs to be addressed through indigenous capability development," he said.
Indian Army organised an event ‘Umeed Ki Sehar’ at Uri in J&K’s Baramulla. Bollywood celebrities Vicky Kaushal and Sonal Chauhan attended the one-day cultural event. Locals enthusiastically participated in the event. “I did a film on Uri but never got an opportunity to visit the place. This is my first visit to Uri. I have waited for this opportunity for long and I am very thankful to Vats sir, to the Indian Army. In the future as well, I will keep on searching for reasons to visit the place,” Vicky said. Sonal Chauhan thanked the Indian Army for the opportunity. “The best thing is that Vicky and I are the first among actors to visit Uri. I am feeling very proud. Uzbekistan Army contingent arrived in Delhi on March 08 for Indo-Uzbek Joint Exercise Dustlik-ll. Rezang La Battalion Kharga Warriors representing Indian Army in exercise. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh attended Combined Commanders' Conference in Kevadia on March 05. He also visited the Statue of Unity today along with COAS General MM Naravane, Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh, CDS General Bipin Rawat and IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria.
Army Chief General MM Naravane spoke about India's position on the standoff with China in Ladakh and said that the resolve of safeguarding the country's interest was shown. The Army chief added that India's engagements with China should continue as they have in the past. “Whatever we did has shown the resolve that we have in maintaining our interest foremost. With this approach our relations with China would develop along the path we wish. As two neighbours, who would like to have peace and tranquility on their borders. Engagements with China must continue as they have in the past, nobody wants an unsettled border,” he said. A border standoff between the Indian and Chinese militaries began in May last year. In June, it resulted in a clash in Galwan Valley in which 20 Indian soldiers were killed. After nearly nine months, both armies withdrew artillery and camps, marking disengagement.

Face masks and sanitizers have became necessity during the time of pandemic and gifting facemasks to soldiers showed students' love for them.
Indian Army Chief General MM Naravane lashed out at Pakistan over its continued support to terrorists. Speaking at the Army Day celebration, the Army Chief said that Indian forces have been giving a stern response to provocations at the border and added that around 300 to 400 terrorists are waiting across the border to infiltrate into India. He also added that forces have thwarted numerous infiltration attempts by terrorists into Kashmir. The Army Chief also added that there has been a 44% rise in ceasefire violations by Pakistan.
