Around 5,000 manta rays swim in the warm waters of Maldives, where they are protected.

Globally, the species faces multiple threats, though.

Beth Faulkner of the Maldivian Manta Ray Project says that swimming in the wild with these gentle giants can help their survival: “The more people are aware of manta rays … the more they’re going to want to protect them.”
