The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed the petitions filed by the Maharashtra government and its former home minister Anil Deshmukh challenging the Bombay High Court order directing a preliminary enquiry by the CBI into the allegations of corruption and misconduct levelled against him by former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh. The bench in its order stated, "Nature of allegations and personas involved needs an enquiry by an independent agency. It is a matter of public confidence. We are not inclined to entertain this. dismissed." "They are closely working together till they fall apart, both holding a particular position. Then should the CBI not investigate?" the bench asked. Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh resigned on Monday hours. Anil Deshmukh’s resignation from the post of Maharashtra home minister has triggered a fresh wave of turmoil in the ruling Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi. Soon after Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh submitted his resignation to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, state minister and NCP leader Nawab Malik informed that Anil Deshmukh no more wanted to remain in his post. "After the high court order, Home Minister Anil Deshmukh met Pawar Ji and party leaders and said he doesn't want to remain in the post because the inquiry will be there. He went to tender his resignation to the CM. Party has requested to the CM to accept his resignation," said Nawab Malik. Anil Deshmukh's resignation comes amid corruption allegations by former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh. In his resignation letter to Maharashtra CM, Home Minister said he doesn't find it morally correct to continue as the home minister after Bombay High Court's order.
A huge crowd was seen at Mumbai's Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in Kurla on April 13. However, Chief PRO of Central Railway, Shivaji Sutar claimed that the crowd was part of usual rush and appealed everyone to follow social distancing. As Tika Utsav was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intensify the fight against COVID-19, people arrived at BKC Jumbo COVID-19 centre in Mumbai to get COVID-19 vaccination. Elderly people celebrated after getting their COVID jab at the centre. Four-day Tika Utsav commenced on April 11. One of the beneficiary expressed satisfaction after getting vaccination. Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said that in Maharashtra, average daily cases on week basis have grown significantly and reached a level of 57,000 plus and RT-PCR tests are progressively coming down. "In Maharashtra you'll find that average daily cases, week on week, have grown significantly and reached a level of 57,000 plus. Tests per million are growing but not keeping pace with growth of average daily cases. If you look at share of RT-PCR tests, it's progressively coming down," he said.
Over 10 patients died in two hospitals in Maharashtra allegedly due to oxygen shortage. Angry relatives stormed the hospitals at Nalla Sopara in Palgarh district on Monday night. Hospital authorities, however, insisted that there was no shortage of oxygen. Police reached the spot and took cognisance of the matter following ruckus. Deaths were reported hours after an audio message of Vasai Mayor Rajiv Patil went viral. Message purportedly highlighted a severe shortage of oxygen needed for patients. Patil later confirmed authenticity of the message, appealed state govt to solve the matter.
