Over 20 crore people from Assam, Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are voting in a huge electoral exercise today. For the latter three, this is the first and only phase of polling. It is Assam's third and final, while Bengal has five more. The 140 seats of neighbouring Kerala also vote in a single phase today, with the LDF government led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan looking to retain power. In Assam, the final phase sees 40 seats in play, with the ruling BJP targeting a second term. Puducherry is currently under President's Rule after the dramatic collapse of the V Narayanasamy-led Congress government.

Farooq Abdullah, TMC MP Saugata Roy, Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi, NCP MP Supriya Sule, Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav attended the meeting.
Maharashtra reported 67,123 fresh COVID cases, 56,783 discharges, and 419 deaths on April 17. While Maharashtra's capital reported 8,834 new COVID-19 cases, 6,617 discharges and 52 deaths in last 24 hours. On the other side, Karnataka today registered 17,489 new positive cases, 5,565 discharges and 80 deaths. Kerala also reported 13,835 new cases, 3654 recoveries and 27 deaths today. Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh reported 11,269 new coronavirus cases, 6,497 recoveries, and 66 deaths in last 24 hours.

On the eve of single-phase elections in Kerala, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor confidently said that United Democratic Front (UDF) is coming as a force in the southern state of India. "I have campaigned in 56 constituencies. What I have seen on the ground has convinced me that the momentum is with the UDF. We are assured of very clear victory. Delhi couple, who misbehaved with Delhi Police over not wearing face mask in the car yesterday (April 18), has been arrested by the police. The couple argued with police when cops stopped them for not wearing face mask in the car. While speaking to ANI, the couple gave the clarifications for not wearing the masks. "We were in the car, and we thought the mask was not required inside the car. It is important to wear the mask," said Pankaj Dutta, COVID norms violator to ANI. "I feel suffocation and breathing problems when I wear mask. Logically, I thought that it was not needed in the car as I was with my husband only. My opinion is that mask must be worn at public places," said Abha Yadav, COVID norms violator to ANI. The couple have been booked under multiple sections of Delhi Disaster Mgmt Act. The incident took place in Daryaganj area during weekend curfew.
As national capital is all set to go for a week-long lockdown due to prevailing COVID-19 situation in the city from 10 pm today onwards, city Police Commissioner SN Shrivastava informed that the most essential services, commodities will be available throughout the lockdown. "A lockdown has been announced by Delhi Govt from 10pm tonight till 5am on 26th April. My appeal to residents of Delhi is to stay indoors. Most essential services, commodities will be available," Shrivastava told media persons.
In the view of the lockdown imposed in Delhi from 10 pm today till 5am on April 26, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation announced that the services would be available during the morning (8 am to 10 am) and evening (5 pm to 7 pm) peak hours across the network with a headway (frequency) of 30 minutes. For rest of the hours of the day, metro rail services across the network will be available with a frequency of 60 minutes only. Services during this period can be availed only by the exempted category of people on the production of the valid ID cards.

Hitting back at senior Congress leader Manmohan Singh for his critique of the government's COVID-19 management, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Monday alleged the second wave of the pandemic was instead fuelled by Congress ruled states as they were busy raising doubts about vaccines rather than vaccinating people. Responding to Singh's letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vardhan also said that the letter drafters of the senior Congress leader have done a great disservice to his standing. Tweeting the letter to Singh, the health minister said, "History shall be kinder to you Dr Manmohan Singh ji if your offer of 'constructive cooperation' and valuable advice was followed by your @INCIndia leaders as well in such extraordinary times !" Singh on Sunday wrote to Prime Minister Modi suggesting five measures to battle the COVID-19 crisis, including ramping up vaccination and boosting supply of medicines.
