Centre announces new rules for social media platforms to curb misuse

The central government on February 25 announced new rules to"curb the misuse of social media".

Ravi Shankar Prasad, Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, said that social media platforms will be required to disclose the originator of mischievous post or tweet upon being asked either by a court order or a government authority.

Other important rules include the establishment of a grievance redressal mechanism by respective social media platforms to resolve issues faced by their users such as harassment, posting of obscene pictures and videos.

"This should be only in relation to sovereignty and integrity of India, the security of the state, public order, relations with foreign states, or rape, sexually explicit content etc," Prasad further explained.
