U’khand: Protestors march towards state Assembly; hurl stones at police

Protestors pelted stones at police near Gairsain in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli.

The demonstrators were demanding widening of the 19-km road from Ghat to Nandprayag.

Police lathi-charged and used water cannons to disperse the crowd.

“With their demand of widening the road, they called for a march to the state Assembly.

Attempts were made to stop the protesters at Jangalchatti barrier but they moved further after a scuffle.

They were again stopped at Diwalikhal which is the final barrier.

Then, the protesters hurled stones at the police.

Many jawans sustain injuries.

One of them got serious injuries on the head,” said Chamoli SP Yashwant Singh.

People pelted stones after police tried to stop the protesters at a barrier in Diwali Khal area of Uttarakhand's Chamoli district on March 01. They were going to hold protest demonstration demanding the expansion of 19-km road from Ghat to Nandprayag, near Garsain. While speaking to media, Chamoli SP Yashwant Singh Chauhan said, "When we tried to stop the protesters in Diwali Khal area, they tried to break barriers. When we dispersed them, they pelted stones at us in which many of our personnel were injured." As per Uttarakhand Chief Minister's Office, CM Trivendra Singh Rawat has taken cognizance of the incident in Chamoli's Diwali Khal area and directed magisterial inquiry into the matter.

Mahakumbh: Lakhs of devotees participate in third ‘Shahi Snan’ at Haridwar

Amid rising Covid cases, lakhs of devotees gathered at Haridwar for Mahakumbh. Devotees took a holy dip at Har Ki Pauri ghat on the occasion of third 'Shahi Snan’. IG Kumbh Mela Sanjay Gunjyal said that 6 lakh people arrived for ‘Baisakhi Snan’ this year. He added that the crowd was less compared to previous years. Har Ki Pauri ghat was then cleared for Sadhus of Niranjani Akhara. Clad in saffron Sadhus of Niranjani Akhara participated in third 'shahi snan' at Har ki Pauri ghat. The duration of the congregation has been curtailed to one month due to Covid-19 pandemic. Uttarakhand reported 1,925 new Covid cases in the last 24 hours, informed health department.
