Political war of words erupted over Income Tax raids on Bollywood celebrities. Properties linked to filmmaker Anurag Kashyap and actor Taapsee Pannu was raided. Sites linked to Reliance Entertainment CEO Shibhashish Sarkar were also raided. I-T department was probing alleged tax evasion linked to Phantom Films which was dissolved in 2018. Some politicians and govt critics alleged political vendetta behind the raids. “BJP is misusing institutions like CBI, ED, I-T Department for political benefits. It's political vendetta. There is a dictator who doesn't want to listen to voices against him. He is destroying all institutions. Maharashtra came out as one of the major hotspots for the COVID-19 virus; government has imposed lockdown-like restrictions in the state. Daily wage earners have suffered the most in the state amid pandemic induced restrictions. Expressing his plight, a shoeshiner, near Gateway of India in Mumbai talked to ANI about his dwindling income. Umesh Sakes, shoe polisher said, "I've been working here for the past 5 years. Earlier, I used to earn Rs 100-200/day. Now it's hardly Rs 50/day."
Family members of COVID-19 patients protested outside District collector office by sitting on road demanding supply of Remdesivir injection for the patients. The shortage of Remdesivir injection has created panic among the family members of the COVID-19 patients. "My father is hospitalised for last 6 days, his medications haven't begun completely. He's in ICU. I've looked for Remdesivir in all cities," said a family member. "Hospitals are saying we are not responsible for patient's condition otherwise they have to go on ventilators. So, arrange the injection from outside. We are not getting the injection as the black marketing for the injection is going on. The helpline number provided by the administration for Remdesivir injection supply either does not connect or they end up providing some other helpline numbers, all are fake," said another family member.
After Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced strict restrictions on April 13 to contain spread of COVID-19, the restaurant business again fearing for loss. According to the restaurant owners they are already facing loses due to fewer customers and now after restrictions it would be very difficult for them to run their business. As the second wave of COVID-19 hit India, demand of medical oxygen increased in Maharashtra's Pune. The suppliers are facing difficulties in procuring the liquid oxygen from the manufacturers. Maharashtra government on April 13 announced the imposition of Section 144 in the state from today in view of rising COVID-19 cases. Maharashtra had reported 60,212 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours.
Pune Police detained four persons in Pimpri Chinchwad on April 10 with 40 Remdesivir injections meant for black marketing. This comes at a time when coronavirus cases are surging in Maharashtra and people are not struggling in getting the medication. "4 persons were caught based on the information from different places with Remdesivir vaccine. They were in connection with each other and used to inject in the body of a dead person and showed that the person had been vaccinated for COVID and after that they used to sell outside. The selling price to the needy was approx Rs 20,000 instead of Rs 1,100 available at hospitals," said Krishna Prakash, Police Commissioner of Pimpri Chinchwad.
