Actor-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty, who recently joined Bharatiya Janata Party, held a roadshow in West Bengal's Bishnupur on March 28.
"The voter turnout recorded yesterday shows that 'poriborton' (change) is coming," he said.
In the first phase, 30 seats covering all assembly constituencies from the districts of Purulia and Jhargram and a segment of Bankura, Purba Medinipur and Paschim Medinipur went to polls to decide on the electoral fate of 191 candidates, including 21 women.
The remaining seven phases for the 294-member West Bengal Assembly will be held on different dates with the final round of voting scheduled on April 29.
West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar cast his vote in the eighth phase of assembly polls. The governor was accompanied by his wife Sudesh Dhankhar who also cast her vote. Dhankhar and his wife voted at a polling station in Chowringhee in Kolkata. BJP's Mithun Chakraborty also cast his vote in the eighth phase of Bengal Assembly polls. The actor-turned-leader voted at a polling booth in Kashipur-Belgachia of North Kolkata. Congratulating the security personnel, Mithun said he never voted so peacefully before. Meanwhile, BJP chief JP Nadda urged Bengal voters to cast their votes while following Covid norms. Voting is underway at 35 constituencies in four districts of West Bengal. As many as 283 candidates are in the fray in the last phase of the Assembly elections. The counting of votes for Bengal polls will take place on May 2.

Union Minister for State for Parliamentrary Affairs, V Muraleedharan, on May 06 visited the house of a BJP worker in West Bengal's Paschim Medinipur and met the victims of the post-polls violence that has been reported in several parts of the state. Muraleedharan's convoy was also attacked by locals when he was visiting the Panchkhuri village in the district today. Muraleedharan blamed "TMC goons" for the attack.

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar questioned the safety of common people in West Bengal after the attack on the convoy of Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs V Muraleedharan who was visiting Paschim Medinipur after post-poll violence was reported in several parts of the state. "If a minister's convoy can be attacked, then, who is safe in Bengal? This is state-sponsored violence. We condemn violence in Bengal. Special measures should be taken to bring the culprits to justice," said Union Minister Javadekar.
At least 20 persons were killed in lightning strikes across three districts of south Bengal on Monday. The state disaster management said nine people died each in Murshidabad and Hooghly districts and two died in the Purba Medinipur district.

A police case has been filed against BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari and his brother for allegedly stealing relief material worth several lakhs from a municipality office in West Bengal's Purba Medinipur district. The BJP has repeatedly thrown the charge of siphoning off relief material at the Trinamool Congress but now Suvendu Adhikari and his brother have been booked on exactly the same charge.

Police along with local artists started awareness drive for COVID-19 in West Bengal's Bankura. Artisans, dressed as coronavirus, urged people to "stay at home". West Bengal registered 14,281 new COVID-19 cases on April 24. Currently there are 81,375 active cases in the state.
