After several members of a family died post drinking homeopathy medicine containing 91 percent alcohol, Chhattisgarh government is mulling to restart online delivery of liquor amid the lockdown, like last year. "Liquor shops are closed. Sale and purchase attempts of alcohol are being made from other states. People died in Bilaspur after consuming medicines in absence of alcohol. So our Govt's thinking of implementing online delivery of liquor, like last lockdown," said state's Excise Minister Kawasi Lakhma.
Health Minister of Chhattisgarh, TS Singh Deo on May 08 said the state government will receive 3.50 lakh doses of Covishield today and the further vaccination will go on with this. "We received 1.50 lakh Covaxin doses from Bharat Biotech on May 1 and the vaccination is going on with that. We'll receive 3.50 lakh doses of Covishield today and the vaccination will further go on with this," Deo said media persons.
Journalists recall release of CRPF jawan by naxals in Chhattisgarh. The abducted CRPF jawan Rakeshwar Singh was released by naxals. Manhas was brought to the CRPF camp in Bijapur after he was released. “A press note was released saying that the government is preparing a team for mediation. Bastar IGP was informed; a two-member team was formed. Maoists asked us to come with the team formed by the government. 35-40 maoists were present, several adivasis were present there. The soldier was released in our presence and handed over to us,” a journalist said. Another said, We went to the place where the soldier was kept. Soldier is healthy but he is mentally troubled. He told me that he got lost during the ambush. Maoists said that they were leaving him on humanitarian grounds. They (maoists) said that the soldier be sent back home. Bringing back the soldier was everyone’s responsibility.”

Family members of missing CoBRA jawan urged the government to take action and ensure his release. This comes after Maoists claimed that the missing CoBRA commando is in their custody. Maoists also sought the appointment of a mediator to whom he could be handed over. Constable Rakeshwar Singh Manhas went missing after the gunfight along Chhattisgarh’s Sukma-Bijapur border. Meanwhile, Rakeshwar’s family along with locals blocked the Jammu-Akhnoor highway. Demanding his release, the family alleged that neither the Centre nor the state governments are taking action to bring the jawan back. The CoBRA jawan was part of a squad that had gone for an anti-Naxal operation on Friday. As many as 22 security personnel were killed and 31 others were injured in the fierce gunbattle.

Maoists have claimed that they have held a jawan captive after Saturday’s encounter where 22 jawans were killed. A local journalist from Bastar, has said that Maoists called him and informed him that the jawan was safe and also set some conditions for his release. The journalist said that they have asked the Maoists to release a video or pictures of the missing jawan and they have agreed to do so. The Maoists have also demanded that a team of interlocutors be set up by the government. The ultras also claimed to have lost four of their men & seized 14 weapons from the forces. Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel commented on the deadly Bijapur gunfight. India lost over 20 soldiers in April 3 encounter with Maoists who ambushed forces reportedly hunting for Madvi Hidma. Hidma is a sinister Maoist believed to have hand in multiple attacks. Baghel said, “It was not an attack on (police) camp...We had gone there to corner them. We have been continuously setting up camps and making inroads into the Maoist bastions from three sides Dantewada, Sukma and Bijapur (south Bastar).” “Our operation (against Naxals) will be continued and more camps of security forces will be set up. Former Attorney General & Constitutional law expert Soli Sorabjee died on Friday. The 91-year-old veteran lawyer passed away after getting infected with Covid-19. Sorabjee had served as the Attorney General for India from 1989-90 & then from 1998-2004. The Former Attorney General was admitted to a private hospital in South Delhi. President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and condoled Sorabjee's demise. VP Venkaiah Naidu, union ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, RS Prasad and Smriti Irani also paid their tribute to the former Attorney General. NCP chief Sharad Pawar and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee also tweeted and expressed their condolences. Born in 1930, Soli Sorabjee had been honoured with Padma Vibhushan in 2002.

India and the European Union (EU) on Saturday announced their decision to resume negotiations for a balanced and comprehensive trade agreement after a gap of eight years and unveiled an ambitious connectivity partnership, during a virtual meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and leaders of 27 member nations of the bloc. In his remarks, Modi invited the EU to support a proposal by India and South Africa to waive patents on COVID-19 vaccines so that there can be equitable vaccine access for the entire world, officials said.
