Home Minister Amit Shah assured the Gorkha population that they would not be affected by the NRC. Speaking in Kalimpong, ahead of Assembly polls on the 17th of April, Shah said that TMC has been spreading rumours about the NRC and said that not a single Gorkha would be asked to leave. Shah also said that the CPM and the TMC had both been unjust to the region and said that the BJP would form an SIT to probe and punish those responsible for the killing of the local population in 1986 & the more recent Gorkhaland agitation. Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a roadshow in Kalimpong on Apr 12 blamed TMC for lying about NRC and said that it has not been brought yet here but even after it is brought, not even a single Gorkha will be affected. Former Attorney General & Constitutional law expert Soli Sorabjee died on Friday. The 91-year-old veteran lawyer passed away after getting infected with Covid-19. Sorabjee had served as the Attorney General for India from 1989-90 & then from 1998-2004. The Former Attorney General was admitted to a private hospital in South Delhi. President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and condoled Sorabjee's demise. VP Venkaiah Naidu, union ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, RS Prasad and Smriti Irani also paid their tribute to the former Attorney General. NCP chief Sharad Pawar and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee also tweeted and expressed their condolences. Born in 1930, Soli Sorabjee had been honoured with Padma Vibhushan in 2002.

Polling for fifth phase of West Bengal assembly elections began at 7 am across 45 seats. Long queues of voters were seen outside polling stations across six districts, Elections are being held in Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Nadia, North 24 Parganas and Purba Bardhaman. Over one crore voters will exercise their franchise to decide the fate of 342 candidates. Tight security arrangements have been made to ensure peaceful voting. The Election Commission has deployed at least 853 companies of central forces to ensure free and fair voting. Elections for 294 seats in West Bengal are being held in eight phases, results on May 2.
