Former Attorney General & Constitutional law expert Soli Sorabjee died on Friday. The 91-year-old veteran lawyer passed away after getting infected with Covid-19. Sorabjee had served as the Attorney General for India from 1989-90 & then from 1998-2004. The Former Attorney General was admitted to a private hospital in South Delhi. President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and condoled Sorabjee's demise. VP Venkaiah Naidu, union ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, RS Prasad and Smriti Irani also paid their tribute to the former Attorney General. NCP chief Sharad Pawar and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee also tweeted and expressed their condolences. Born in 1930, Soli Sorabjee had been honoured with Padma Vibhushan in 2002.

Justice NV Ramana took oath as the new Chief Justice of India (CJI) on April 24. He was administered the oath by President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu along with other dignitaries were present at the ceremony. Justice NV Ramana succeeded Justice SA Bobde and became the 48th person to hold the post of Chief Justice of India.
Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 14 interacted with Governors and Lieutenant Governors of all states and Union Territories on COVID-19 situation and ongoing vaccination drive in the country through video conferencing. PM Modi suggested that Governors can actively engage to ensure that social institutions collaborate seamlessly with the state governments towards micro containment. He also underlined that Centre is committed to ensuring adequate availability of vaccines. The Prime Minister added that during 'Tika Utsav', vaccination drive was expanded and new vaccination centres have also came up.
Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department organised 'Shikara rally' in Dal Lake in Srinagar on the occasion of 130th birth anniversary of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar on April 14. "Tourism organizes such rally as we are concerned about income of Shikara owners. There are approx 60 Shikaras here and we promote Shikara ride so that people come to Kashmir and enjoy the ride," said Abdul Razak, Shikara Owner. Director Tourism Kashmir, G N Itoo said, "Today 'Shikara Rally' has been organised in Dal Lake on the occasion of 130th birth anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar in context of historical importance and also a message to the people as Dal Lake is a hub of tourism, people should come here and enjoy the ride."
During a public meeting at West Bengal's Purba Bardhaman, BJP chief JP Nadda pointed at CM Mamata Banerjeee for not commenting on 'anti-Dalit' statement by a TMC leader. "Today is Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar's 130th birth anniversary... Just now, a TMC leader used an offending word for Dalit brothers that I can't say here. I am sad by seeing that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has not yet condemned it. This is TMC's anti-Dalit face and we should understand this," said JP Nadda. TMC leader Sujata Mondal Khan made controversial remarks against Dalits as she equated them with beggars.

He also took to twitter saying Ambedkar gave a strong foundation to independent India. VP Venkaiah Naidu paid floral tribute to Ambedkar at his residence in Delhi. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also paid tribute to the Father of Indian Constitution. BSP supremo Mayawati remembered Ambedkar's legacy on his birth anniversary. DMK chief MK Stalin paid a floral tribute to BR Ambedkar at Koyambedu in Chennai. Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was born on 14 April, 1891 in Mhow of Madhya Pradesh. Termed as the father of Indian constitution, he always worked for the welfare of deprived people. Ambedkar was conferred with Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, in 1990.

While addressing a meeting with presiding officers over COVID situation in the country, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on April 19 said, "To contain COVID-19 spread, we all need to work in tandem and on a war footing. In these tough times, it's responsibility of all presiding officers and leaders to stand by people." "Through public representatives of our respective states, we need to spread awareness among people to follow all COVID protocols. We need to send the message that observance of precautions is the biggest weapon in the fight against this pandemic," Birla added.
Ambassador of Nepal to India, Nilamber Acharya visited Parliament and met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. He said, "It was really good. We (India and Nepal) are close friends. Nepal draws inspiration from India's democracy. The meeting with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla reflected the affinity two countries share for each other." He also appreciated the COVID-19 "vaccine power" of India and thanked the government for providing 1 million doses.

24 states including Maharashtra, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal have more than 15% positivity rate for COVID-19 in their daily infections, informed Union Health Ministry. "Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Haryana and Bihar have a high caseload," said Arti Ahuja, Additional Secretary (Health) while addressing a press conference in Delhi.
TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee responded to a reporter’s question on the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Banerjee said that said fighting Covid-19 is one of her top priorities now. “I am just a street fighter. I can boost up people so that we can fight against BJP. One cannot do everything alone. I think all together we can fight the battle for 2024. Let's fight Covid first. Now it is not the time, we should concentrate on Covid,” said Mamata. Banerjee powered TMC to victory in the West Bengal Assembly Elections.
