Optician appointment saves teen from potentially deadly malignant brain tumour
A mother has praised the work of an optician who potentially saved her son's life, after a check-up led to the discovery of a potentially deadly brain tumour.
Sophie Huggett, from Eastbourne in East Sussex, first spotted signs of her son’s condition when she noticed 13-year-old Daniel squinting at the screen during his online lessons.
She booked Daniel in for a routine check up at Hailsham Specsavers on February 1, and the optician asked whether he had recently had a head injury.
The optician had found Daniel’s optic nerve behind both eyes to be “completely” swollen and advised his worried mother to take him straight to A&E.
An investigation is underway at a prison after six inmates fell ill from a suspected mass poisoning, officials said. The owners of a trampoline park where 11 people sustained fractured spines have been fined and ordered to do community service. David Elliot Shuttleworth, 34, and Matthew Melling, 33, were the directors of Flip Out Chester, where 270 people were injured between December 2016 and February 2017. The number of local A&E admissions was such that a delegation of medics visited the site near Ellesmere Port to raise concerns. Shuttleworth was fined ÂŁ6,500 and Melling ÂŁ6,300, with each ordered to do 250 hours of unpaid community service. Report by Jonesia.
