Powerful earthquake rocks southwest Mexico near Acapulco
A powerful earthquake has struck the southwest of Mexico late Tuesday.
The United States Geological Survey said the 7.0 magnitude quake struck 2.5 miles east-northeast of Los Órganos de San Agustín, about eight miles from the Pacific Coast beach resort city of Acapulco.
In an unusual event for the east coast of the United States, New York experienced a rare earthquake measuring 4.7 magnitude, as reported by the US Geological Survey (USGS) on Friday (Apr 5). The quake, striking in the morning around 10:23 am (local time), caused buildings to shake, instigating panic among residents. This occurrence was particularly alarming as New York City is not typically considered an earthquake-prone area. Coincidentally, the earthquake coincided with a speech by Janti Soeripto, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Save the Children US, addressing the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
