On October 10, the Taliban said that the United States has agreed to provide humanitarian aid to Afghanistan as the country teeters on the brink of economic disaster.

ABC reports that the statement followed the first direct talks since the chaotic withdrawal of U.S. troops in August.

The U.S. statement on the talks stated that the two sides , “discussed the United States’ provision of robust humanitarian assistance, directly to the Afghan people.”.

The U.S. reportedly agreed to sending humanitarian aid provided the assistance was not linked to a formal recognition of the Taliban.

A State Department spokesman called the discussions , “candid and professional.”.

The U.S. delegation focused on security and terrorism concerns and safe passage for U.S. citizens, other foreign nationals and our Afghan partners, as well as on human rights, including the meaningful participation of women and girls in all aspects of Afghan society, Ned Price, State Department spokesman, via ABC.

On October 9, the Taliban ruled out cooperation with Washington on containing the Islamic State group in Afghanistan.
