Government has not ‘woken up’ to cost-of-living crisis
Shadow cabinet minister Louise Haigh says the government has not "woken up" to the scale of Britain’s cost-of-living crisis.
The Labour MP said that people's national insurance, energy bills and council tax are all going up whilst wages, pensions and benefits are not.
The shadow transport secretary reiterated her party's call for a windfall tax on the profits of North Sea oil and gas producers to help alleviate the pressure on UK households.

Labour's Louise Haigh has rejected the news that NHS targets are being met. It comes as the health secretary revealed waiting lists have fallen for the fifth month in a row. "Waiting lists are still 320,000 higher than when Rishi Sunak became prime minister so he's failing on his own metrics. A&E waiting times are higher as are ambulance waits," she said. The sister of the headteacher Ruth Perry, who took her own life following an Ofsted report, says it's "depressing" to see the Government has decided to keep one word judgements for school inspections. The government was asked by the Education Select Committee to scrap the single word assessment - such as "outstanding or inadequate" - but said today it's keeping the headline grade because it provides a "succinct" summary for parents and schools. Angela van den Bogerd, a former senior director at the Post Office, arrived at the Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry on Thursday morning. She began with an apology on the first of her two days of giving evidence, telling the inquiry she was "truly, truly sorry" for the "devastation" caused to wrongly convicted sub-postmasters and their families. Errors in the Post Office's Horizon IT system meant money appeared to be missing from many branch accounts when, in fact, it was not.
