Chancellor Rishi Sunak has defended his move to offer a universal £400 energy bills grant to even the most well-off households to help Brits cope with the rising cost of living.

"When energy bills are going up by on average £1,200, that's going to hit the vast majority of people … there will be lots of people who are not on benefits, not pensioners but still need support," he said.
