Who is Princess Diana?

Princess Diana remains to be a beloved figure across the globe, more than 20 years after her death.

Born Diana Frances Spencer on 1 July 1961 in Norfolk, her family were wealthy and had a close relationship with the British Royal family.

In her youth, Diana had a talent for swimming, diving and ballet.

In 1980, she started dating Prince Charles, the Queen’s son.

A year later, the couple were engaged, with Diana later saying that she had only properly met Charles a dozen or so times before the proposal.

It was a life-changing moment for the then 19-year-old, who at the time, was working as a nursery assistant.

Married in St Paul's Cathedral on 29 July 1981, the broadcasted royal wedding caught the attention of an estimated 750 million people around the world.

Shortly after the wedding, the Princess of Wales became involved in her official royal duties, visiting numerous schools and hospital across the globe.

It was during these world tours where she quickly became a fan favourite with the public due to her down-to-earth nature.

Just 11 months after getting married, Princess Diana gave birth to Prince William and two years later, Harry.

In December 1992, it was announced that the Prince and Princess of Wales had agreed to separate.

In 1995, Diana gave a now famous television interview where she spoke of her unhappiness in her personal life and the pressures of her role in the public eye.

Their divorce was finalised in 1996.

Despite their divorce, Diana continued to have a large media presence and used this attention to highlight several charitable campaigns in which she was passionate about.

Perhaps most famous of all was when she was photographed walking across a minefield in Angola in an effort to stop the use of landmines.

Diana is also remembered for her work in helping change the perception of HIV/Aids.

Princess Diana died in 1997 after a car crash in Paris.

At that time, she was one of the most famous people in the world.
