Madison County Sheriff Buddy Harwood made the decision to stock the six schools located in the country with the semiautomatic rifles.
The actions comes in the wake of school shootings such as that occurred in Uvalde, TX.
Uvalde law enforcement has received nationwide condemnation for the response to the shooting.
In defending his decision to stock NC schools with semiautomatic weapons, ... Harwood referenced the Uvalde shooting, calling the response "egregiously poor decision-making." According to Harwood, the AR-15 rifles would be locked in a safe to be used by a school resource officer (SRO).
The sheriff's office is working in tandem with the NC school district in question.
News of the sheriff's decision has sparked controversy.
Some, including UNC academics, say that the presence of an SRO and such a weapon in schools can lead to increased violence.

A Nutritionist's Advice for , 'Mindful Drinking'.
HuffPost recently spoke with a registered dietitian , to offer readers tips for "mindful drinking" , to mark the end of "Dry January.".
1. Official guidelines, According to the CDC, men should have no more than two
drinks a day, while women should have no more than one.
Those specific guidelines also point
out that it doesn’t mean seven drinks
in a week for women, it means one
drink a day — so not drinking for
five days and then drinking six drinks
on the sixth day is not the same thing, Christine Byrne, registered dietitian and the owner of Ruby Oak Nutrition in Raleigh, North Carolina, via HuffPost.
2. Stay hydrated, A good practice is following up
any alcoholic drink with a glass of water. .
3. Don't forget to eat, Alcohol can hit harder and faster on
an empty stomach, as it is absorbed
into your body faster without food.
4. Alcohol should
not replace meals, Alcohol lacks necessary nutrition
like protein, fiber or fats, while
still containing calories.

Nutrition is about getting what we
need: proteins, carbohydrates, fats,
vitamins and minerals and water,
and when we’re cutting those things
out to maintain calorie balance,
then there’s a nutrition risk, Christine Byrne, registered dietitian and the owner of Ruby Oak Nutrition in Raleigh, North Carolina, via HuffPost.
5. Avoid binge drinking, The CDC's official definition of binge
drinking is five drinks or more for men

6. Consider your options, Drinking can be leaned on as a way to de-stress,
but often there are other ways to accomplish
this without consuming alcohol.
If somebody believes that having that
drink at the end of the day is their way
to relax, then just by default they’re
not thinking about other ways that
they actually could decompress, Christine Byrne, registered dietitian and the owner of Ruby Oak Nutrition in Raleigh, North Carolina, via HuffPost

16 States Under, Flood Warnings , as Death Toll Climbs.
'Newsweek' reports that flood warnings
have been issued for 16 states as heavy
rain continues to worsen conditions that
have already claimed the lives of two people.
The extreme amount of rain and consequent
flooding comes directly after an arctic blast hit
much of the nation with subzero temperatures.
According to the Associated Press, extreme
winter weather has already killed at least
72 people in the U.S. in January alone. .
A majority of the deaths were attributed
to hypothermia and road accidents.
On January 26, the National Weather Service
(NWS) issued a warning to drivers, stressing
that most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.
Flooding is occurring or
is imminent. Do not attempt
to cross water covered bridges,
dips, or low water crossings.

SpaceX's Third Test of Its , Starship Succeeds Ahead, of Crewed Lunar Mission.
'The Independent' reports that SpaceX's third test of its
Starship has ended successfully, with the spacecraft
falling to Earth somewhere in the Indian ocean. .
The successful test follows two
failed tests which lasted only a few
moments before ultimately exploding.
The third test saw the Starship successfully launch,
separate from its booster, arrive in space, open its
payload door and then fly halfway around the Earth.
This means that the test successfully
accomplished all of the major tests
SpaceX had laid out prior to launch.
Starship is the largest and most
powerful rocket ever built, with
a towering height of 397 feet. .
CEO Elon Musk said prior to launch that the
company had made thousands of upgrades and

Aging Energy Infrastructure, Plus Climate Change, Are a Growing Risk.
NPR reports that Texas investigators say that a power pole , "that appeared to be decayed at the base", was the cause of the worst wildfire in the state's history.
Xcel Energy, the state's electric
utility, said in a statement that , "its facilities appear to have been involved
in an ignition of the Smokehouse Creek fire.".
Rob Gramlich, president of consulting firm
Grid Strategies, warns that many of the U.S.'s
power lines were built 60 to 70 years ago. .
According to Gramlich, most electric utility providers
in the U.S. lack the technology to let them know
when power lines are overheating or sagging.
Combined with increased temperatures
and drier vegetation, this aging infrastructure
could spark larger, more intense wildfires.
There are some utilities
that are really leaders and
are getting ahead of the risk, Michael Wara, director of the Climate and Energy
Policy Program at the Woods Institute for
the Environment at Stanford University, via NPR.
And then there are others
that we look at and think are
walking into a catastrophe, Michael Wara, director of the Climate and Energy
Policy Program at the Woods Institute for
the Environment at Stanford University, via NPR.
According to experts, wildfire prevention
can not only impact safety, but also the
cost of energy bills across the nation.
We cannot afford – literally,
in terms of our pocketbooks –
to have utilities be perceived
by their investors as high risk, Michael Wara, director of the Climate and Energy
Policy Program at the Woods Institute for
the Environment at Stanford University, via NPR.
There is a set of practices
that utilities can take that
do not cost an arm and a leg
that can dramatically cut
the risk of outcomes
like we saw in Texas, Michael Wara, director of the Climate and Energy
Policy Program at the Woods Institute for
the Environment at Stanford University, via NPR
