The Associated Press reports that it was the first fatal attack by a kangaroo in Australia since 1936. The 77-year-old man was found by a relative with "serious injuries" on September 11 in Redmond, about 250 miles southeast of Perth. According to the police, it was believed that the man had been attacked earlier in the day by the kangaroo. The animal was shot and killed by police after it prevented paramedics from reaching the injured man. The kangaroo was posing an ongoing threat to emergency responders, Police statement, via Associated Press. Police said that the man died at the scene. . AP reports that there are no legal restrictions from keeping native fauna as pets in Australia. In southwestern Australia, gray kangaroos can weigh up to 119 pounds and stand over four feet tall. In 1936, 38-year-old William Cruickshank died after attempting to rescue his two dogs from a large kangaroo. The man, who died in Hillston in New South Wales state on Australia's east coast, had suffered extensive injuries that included a broken jaw.
