India's Mars Orbiter craft has run out of propellant and its battery drained beyond the safe limit, fuelling speculation that the country's maiden interplanetary mission 'Mangalyaan' may have finally completed its long innings.

The Mars orbiter craft functioned for almost eight years, well beyond its designed mission life of six months.

According to a new study by an international team of planetary scientists, Mars may have had enough water 4.5 billion years ago to cover it in a global ocean up to 300 meters or upto almost 1,000 feet deep. Along with organic molecules and other elements distributed throughout the Solar System by asteroids and comets at this time, they argue, these conditions indicate that Mars may have been the first planet in the Solar System to support life. Since 1960s, several missions have been launched to probe the Red Planet. Today, we take a quick look at few of the most crucial ones that were aimed at Mars. NASA's Perseverance Rover Finds Ingredients for Life on Mars

NASA's Perseverance , Rover Finds Ingredients for , Life on Mars. Vice reports that the NASA Perseverance rover's search for signs of life on Mars may have uncovered details about habitable conditions that once existed on the Red Planet. Currently, Mars is a frigid and barren world, but a growing body of evidence suggests that the planet was warmer, wetter and even habitable billions of years ago. The Perseverance rover is searching for traces of ancient life in samples collected from the Jezero Crater. On November 23, the teams behind the rover's specialized instruments published three studies summarizing their findings. The team estimates that Mars hosted water about 3.8 billion years ago. . In that kind of environment, we're seeing very, very strange chemistry which is not common on Earth at all, but seems to be more common on Mars because we've seen these kinds of materials in almost all the missions now. , Eva Scheller, Planetary scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, via 'Vice'. Perseverance also found organic molecules, key ingredients for life, which confirms that the Jezero Crater once enjoyed habitable conditions. An analysis of rocks in the Séítah formation revealed watery alterations to minerals and crystals. It's been a really amazing journey. I've really been able to see the mission unfold scientifically from the very beginning, so it's actually a little bit surreal that we finally figured out a place to land and we actually got information from where we landed, Eva Scheller, Planetary scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, via 'Vice'. It has been a huge undertaking by hundreds and hundreds of people, Eva Scheller, Planetary scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, via 'Vice'
