The UK’s Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris has ordered an independent inquiry into the Omagh bombing. A dissident republican bomb exploded in the County Tyrone town on 15th August 1998. Twenty-nine people were killed, including a woman pregnant with twins, making it the deadliest single event of the Troubles. The British government’s decision comes after a 2021 ruling into a judicial review brought by Michael Gallagher - father of 21-year-old Aiden who died in the bombing. The terrorism threat level in Northern Ireland has been raised from “substantial” to “severe” just days before a potential visit to the country by US President Joe Biden. But the White House has said that the change won’t alter the President’s plans. The move, based on an MI5 intelligence assessment, follows a rise in dissident republican activity, including a recent gun attack on a top police officer. This reverses a downgrade in Northern Ireland's terror threat level last March - its first change for 12 years.
