On November 29, these significantly lower figures were reiterated by a spokesperson for Qatar's Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC).

Last year, 'The Guardian' reported that 6,500 South Asian migrant workers had died in Qatar since the country began preparing for the World Cup in 2010.

At the time, Al-Thawadi refuted the report, calling it a "sensational headline" which lacked context and was misleading.

CNN reports that Qatar has built seven new stadiums and numerous hotels, while also expanding the country's airport, rail system and highways ahead of the World Cup.
