Lithium Extraction Project , Worries Those Who Rely on , Water From Colorado River.
Lithium is used to manufacture
electric vehicle batteries.
A new plan to extract lithium in Utah has
raised concerns about how the project could
impact the Colorado River, Fox News reports.
The Paradox Basin, a geologic formation shared by Utah,
Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona, has been analyzed
by an Australian company and its U.S. subsidiaries.
The Paradox Basin, a geologic formation shared by Utah,
Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona, has been analyzed
by an Australian company and its U.S. subsidiaries.
The basin's groundwater has been found
to be rich in lithium salts and other minerals
left over from millions of years ago when
the area was repeatedly flooded and drained.
Australia-based Anson Resources has also
reportedly acquired rights to freshwater
sourced from the nearby Green River. .
The company's plans have given rise
to questions about how the groundwater
and river water are interconnected, in addition
to the impact of lithium on the environment.
'The Guardian' points out that the Green River is
a tributary of the crucial Colorado River, which
supplies water for 40 million people in the West.
We need to have a renewable+ energy
transition, but maybe we shouldn’t be
looking for these kinds of quick-fix energy
solutions on a drought-stricken river, Lauren Wood, a third-generation resident
of Green River, Utah, via Fox News.
Geologists and Earth scientists have cautioned
that it remains unclear how water-intensive the
process of direct lithium extraction actually is.
The technology is too new
for much of a commercial track
record to have been established, Michael McKibben, professor at the University
of California, Riverside, via Fox News.
Ultimately, Utah's water rights division will
make the final decision regarding water
permits for Anson and its U.S. subsidiaries,
a process which could take months or years

Astronomers Discover , Unusual Galaxy , That Should Not Exist.
'Newsweek' reports that NASA's
James Webb Telescope has discovered
a new galaxy that shouldn't exist. .
The dwarf galaxy, referred to as PEARLSDG,
was spotted in an area of space where
astronomers were not expecting to find anything.
A new paper in the 'Astrophysical Journal Letters'
details the strange properties of PEARLSDG,
chiefly how it appears to not be forming new stars.
Normally, dwarf galaxies
orbit larger galaxies, which
influences their formation. .
Our Milky Way is orbited by
about 20 dwarf galaxies, like the Small
Magellanic Cloud and Triangulum II.
PEARLSDG appears to not be
interacting with any nearby galaxies,
while also not forming any new stars.
Scientists now believe PEARLSDG
is a rare isolated quiescent galaxy. .
These types of isolated quiescent
dwarf galaxies haven't really been seen
before except for relatively few cases, Tim Carleton, paper co-author and an assistant research
scientist at Arizona State University, via 'Newsweek'.
They are not really expected to
exist given our current understanding
of galaxy evolution, so the fact that we
see this object helps us improve our
theories for galaxy formation, Tim Carleton, paper co-author and an assistant research
scientist at Arizona State University, via 'Newsweek'.
Generally, dwarf galaxies that
are out there by themselves are
continuing to form new stars, Tim Carleton, paper co-author and an assistant research
scientist at Arizona State University, via 'Newsweek'.
'Newsweek' reports that the findings suggest that
astronomers have much more to learn about dwarf
galaxies, including how they evolve over time.

James Webb Space Telescope released images, providing an unprecedented glimpse into the mysteries of 19 spiral galaxies neighbouring Milky Way. Released by the Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby GalaxieS (PHANGS) project, these awe-inspiring images were captured by the James Webb Space Telescope's Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI). The closest of these galaxies, NGC5068, is a mere 15 million light-years away, while the most distant, NGC1365, resides at a staggering 60 million light years from Earth.
