President Ebrahim Raisi was laid to rest in his hometown of Mashhad on Thursday evening after several days of national mourning and funeral ceremonies held across the country.

The president, aged 63, along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and several other officials, perished in a helicopter crash on Sunday.

The president’s body arrived at Mashhad's Shahid Hashemi Nejad Airport from Birjand, in South Khorasan province, where it was received by arge crowds of mourners.

His coffin was paraded through the streets of Birjand earlier in the day, drawing thousands of people who paid their respects as it was driven through the city in a motorcade.
