High Alert in London: Gatwick Airport Evacuated and Flights Closed, Explosion Near U.S Embassy|Watch
A security incident at London’s Gatwick Airport prompted the evacuation of much of the South Terminal as authorities investigated.
Passengers were urged to remain calm, with safety being prioritized.
Simultaneously, London's Metropolitan Police conducted a controlled explosion near the US Embassy after discovering a suspicious package, closing nearby areas as a precaution.
Both incidents heightened security concerns, with investigations ongoing and affected areas remaining cordoned off for public safety.
There has been widespread disruption at UK airports after an air traffic control glitch. Aviation analytics company Cirium said 84 departures and 71 arrivals were cancelled up to 10pm on Wednesday. National Air Traffic Services (Nats) say the glitch was caused by a radar-related issue and that "there is no evidence that this was cyber related." In one of the largest police operations in over a decade, 474 people were arrested in central London during a mass protest against the UK’s ban on Palestine Action. The Metropolitan Police confirmed 466 arrests for “showing support” for the proscribed group, plus eight others for offences including assaulting officers. The protest, organised by Defend Our Juries, saw hundreds holding signs opposing genocide and supporting Palestine Action.
Critics, including Amnesty International, slammed the arrests as “deeply concerning” and a threat to free speech, saying the demonstrators were peaceful. The government defended the ban, calling Palestine Action a non-peaceful group, while announcing £8.5m in additional aid to Gaza. The crackdown follows the June proscription of the group after activists vandalised RAF aircraft in protest over UK arms sales to Israel.
