Keeping India out of UNSC will call its credibility into question: Jaishankar at DU

IndiaTimes Thursday, 31 August 2023
External affairs minister S Jaishankar on Thursday said keeping India out of the permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council will only call the credibility of the international organisation into question. Speaking at an event at Delhi University, Jaishankar said the UN was formed in 1940 during the Second World War and had only 50 member countries at the time.

Gaza war: Indian working with UN killed as vehicle comes under attack in Rafah | Oneindia

An Indian UN worker lost his life in Gaza after a targeted attack on a UN vehicle in Rafah, marking the first international casualty in the Israel-Hamas conflict. The incident highlights the risks faced by humanitarian workers in conflict zones. UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attack, emphasising the need to protect humanitarian workers. Indian UN representative Ruchira Kamboj condemned civilian casualties and emphasised adherence to international law. The attack follows the UN's backing of Palestinian membership bid, with 143 countries, including India, voting for recognition, prompting a call for reconsideration by the Security Council after a US veto last month. #GazaWar #UNWorkerKilled #RafahAttack #UNVehicleAttack #UNSecurity #IsraelGazaWar #UN #DSSWorker #ConflictZone #HumanitarianSafety ~PR.152~ED.155~GR.124~HT.96~

‘Shame on You’: Israeli Envoy Shreds UN Charter Supporting Palestine | Watch video [Video]

‘Shame on You’: Israeli Envoy Shreds UN Charter Supporting Palestine | Watch video

Israeli Ambassador Gilad Erdan made a dramatic statement at the United Nations General Assembly by tearing up the UN Charter in protest just before the assembly passed a resolution supporting full membership for Palestine. The resolution, which received overwhelming support with 143 votes in favour, asked the Security Council to grant full membership to Palestine, currently holding observer status at the UN. Twenty-five countries abstained from the vote, while nine, including the United States and Israel, voted against it. Erdan criticised the resolution as a "clear violation" of the UN Charter and accused it of circumventing the US veto in the Security Council. He described his actions as a symbolic reflection of the assembly's disregard for the principles outlined in the UN Charter. #IsraeliEnvoyShredsUNCharter #UNCharterShred #Israel #Palestine #UN #UNGA #SecurityCouncil #Resolution #FullMembership #IsraeliEnvoy #GiladErdan #ShameOnYou #Conflict #MiddleEast #Diplomacy #InternationalRelations #PeaceEfforts ~HT.99~PR.152~ED.155~
