Bhaichung Bhutia joins ex-CM Pawan Chamling's party ahead of 2024 polls

Bhaichung Bhutia, the legendary footballer, joined the opposition Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) led by former Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling. He also merged his outfit, the Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP), with the SDF. The assembly polls in Sikkim, along with the parliamentary elections, are scheduled for next year. Bhutia praised Chamling's leadership and vowed to help him win the 2024 assembly elections. Bhutia criticized the present Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, accusing him of mismanagement, misrule, and corruption.

Polling in 102 parliamentary seats across 21 states and Union Territories in the first phase of Lok Sabha Elections commenced at 7 am on April 19 and ended at 6 pm. Over 102 parliamentary constituencies in 21 states and union territories headed to the polling booth on Friday, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir, Puducherry, Lakshadweep, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. West Bengal recorded the highest turnout till 5 PM at 77.57 per cent, followed by Tripura at 76.10 per cent.
