The Supreme Court unanimously upholds the Narendra Modi government's decision to scrap Jammu and Kashmir's special status. The court holds that the integration of the border state with the country was unconditional and complete. The court rejects the argument that Jammu and Kashmir ever enjoyed internal sovereignty. The decision is seen as a boost for PM Modi ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The court directs the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood and calls for assembly elections to be held by September 2024.
