India's approach to Afghanistan continues to be guided by historical relations, friendship with Afghan people: EAM Jaishankar

IndiaTimes Friday, 15 December 2023
In the past two years, some Afghan diplomats have left India as they obtained residency in third countries. The remaining Afghan diplomats have taken over the responsibility for the continued diplomatic functioning of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in India. The Afghan embassy in New Delhi, under Ambassador Farid Mamundzay, announced its permanent closure, citing persistent challenges from the Indian government. Mamundzay's announcement is believed to be related to an internal power struggle and the departure of around 20 diplomats seeking asylum in the West.

US President Biden ‘considering’ dropping Assange charges

United States President Joe Biden says he is “considering” a request from Australia to drop the prosecution of Julian Assange. The WikiLeaks founder has been indicted on 17 espionage charges and one charge of computer misuse over his website’s publication of classified U.S. documents relating to the Afghanistan and Iraq wars almost 15 years ago. The Australian national was taken to Belmarsh prison in London five years ago, after being dragged out of the Ecuadorian embassy, where he stayed while fighting against being taken to the US.
