North Korea has launched its first operational "tactical nuclear attack submarine", a key part of leader Kim Jong Un’s plan to develop a nuclear-armed navy to counter the United States and its Asian allies.
In an event overseen by the North Korea’s leader Kim Jong UN, Submarine No 841 - named Hero Kim Kun Ok after a prominent North Korean historical figure - was launched on Wednesday with much fanfare.
In photographs released by state media, Kim is standing in a shipyard, surrounded by naval officers, and overshadowed by an enormous black submarine, which the reports claim is capable of launching nuclear weapons.
