Post Office scandal: Anger grows as MPs return from recess
Public and political calls for redress for the victims of the Post Office scandal continue to grow as MPs return from their Christmas recess.
The prime minister and the Labour leader have joined calls for Paula Vennells to be stripped of her CBE, as a petition calling for the former Post Office CEO to lose the honour surpasses one million signatures.
On a visit to Lancashire on Monday, Rishi Sunak said he wanted to speed up the compensation process for victims. Meanwhile, Sir Keir Starmer, a former head of the Crown Prosecution Service, has called for prosecution powers to be taken away from the Post Office.

A secret audio recording obtained by ITV News has revealed Post Office boss Paula Vennells was told directly about problems with the Horizon system and warned not to cover them up. In a meeting with independent investigators from Second Sight on July 2, 2013, Ms Vennells was made aware of allegations that sub-postmaster branch accounts could be accessed remotely. This is something the Post Office had denied for years. A Moroccan asylum seeker has been sentenced to life in jail for murder, with a minimum term of 45 years, at Teesside Crown Court. In October last year, 45-year-old Ahmed Alid stabbed Iranian Christian convert Javed Nouri at the house he was sharing with other asylum seekers before looking for more victims in Hartlepool town centre. He then stabbed and killed 70-year-old Terence Carney who was out for his regular early morning walk. Alid told police he had committed his crimes out of “revenge” for Israel killing children in the Palestinian conflict. Report by Jonesia.
