Judge says U-17 deliveries were once normal, read Manusmriti

In the past it was normal for girls to marry young and deliver their first child before they turned 17, a Gujarat high court judge remarked while hearing a minor rape survivor’s plea on Wednesday for permission to terminate her pregnancy. The judge, who also urged the lawyer to read the Manusmriti in this regard, has sought medical opinion from the Rajkot civil hospital on whether it is advisable to abort the survivor’s seven-month fetus keeping in mind the health of the minor and the fetus.
