Assam government has invited public opinion on the proposed law to end polygamy in the state and urged citizens to send suggestions. An expert committee formed by the state has reported that Muslim men having more than one wife is not an essential part of the religion, and legislation limiting the number of wives is within the scope of social welfare and reform.
